A man robbed Jackpot Bingo in the 1000 block of East 10th Street Sunday, fleeing from patrons with an undisclosed amount of cash.
According to a police report, a man entered the business at 10:50 p.m. Sunday, wearing all black clothing and a black face mask. He jumped over the counter, pointed a handgun at one of the clerks and demanded money.
The suspect struck a 45-year-old female clerk in the head, at which time his gun came apart. He then grabbed the money, put it in a large black bag with a shoulder strap and left the business.
Patrons chased the man from the area, and he was last seen in the area of 9th and Virginia streets. A police K-9 was called out but officers were unable to locate the suspect. The clerk didn't require medical help. The incident is under investigation.
In an unrelated item, a fugitive from Virginia led officer M.E. Moseley on a short chase from 13th and Franklin streets to his residence in Lincoln Heights at about 4:30 a.m. today.
Leon Chambliss, 51, was charged with driving left of center, failure to stop for lights and sirens, driving while license revoked and a stop sign violation, in addition to the fugitive warrant. He was taken to Halifax Regional Jail while awaiting extradition to Virginia.
